The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education presents both opportunities and challenges, including in Islamic Education. AI has the potential to function as a shadow teacher by supporting students’ learning through rapid information access, adaptive learning systems, and virtual tutoring. This study aims to conceptually examine the role of AI in IRE learning and analyze its ethical and religious implications. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature review method, drawing on books, journal articles, and scholarly works related to AI, Islamic education, and technology ethics. The findings indicate that AI provides significant benefits in supporting the cognitive aspects of learning; however, it has fundamental limitations as it lacks spiritual awareness, moral consciousness, and exemplary character, which are essential in Islamic education. Uncontrolled use of AI may lead to religious bias, technological dependency, and the reduction of teachers’ roles in character and moral development. Therefore, the use of AI in Islamic Education should be positioned as a supportive learning tool under teacher supervision and guided by the principles of maqashid al-shari’ah. This study concludes that AI cannot replace the role of Islamic education teachers but should serve as an assisting instrument to enhance learning while preserving the spiritual and moral essence of Islamic education.
