This article examines the concept of value-based digital literacy by critically analyzing the roles of ethics, empathy, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of Indonesian education. The purpose of this study is to conceptualize digital literacy not merely as technical competence, but as a human-centered framework that integrates moral responsibility and empathetic awareness in the use of digital technologies. This research employs a qualitative conceptual approach through critical analysis of relevant literature, policy documents, and contemporary scholarly discourse on digital education and AI. The findings indicate that the current implementation of digital literacy in education tends to emphasize instrumental and technical aspects, while ethical considerations and empathic dimensions remain marginal. Furthermore, the integration of AI in educational practices presents both opportunities for personalized learning and risks of dehumanization when not guided by clear ethical and pedagogical principles. The study concludes that value-based digital literacy is essential to ensure that digital transformation in education supports humanization rather than technological determinism. This article suggests that curriculum development, teacher training, and educational policies in Indonesia should explicitly incorporate ethical reasoning and digital empathy as core components of digital literacy in the era of artificial intelligence.
