PERAN PESANTREN DALAM PEMBENTUKAN KARAKTER ANAK

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) constitute an educational ecosystem that integrates religious instruction, role modelling, habituation, supervision, and communal life in character formation. This study examines the mechanisms of children’s character education at Hikmatul Qur’an Islamic Boarding School in Sumedang and identifies the values cultivated through pesantren life. A qualitative case-study design supported by a literature review was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 students, one ustaz, and one kiai, along with participant observation and document analysis. The data were interpreted descriptively and thematically. The findings indicate six central mechanisms: relational exemplarity of religious leaders, worship habituation, consistent discipline, communal living, spiritual guidance, and supervised engagement with technology. These mechanisms support the development of religiosity, discipline, responsibility, honesty, independence, patience, and social care. Character transformation was found to occur gradually through value introduction, imitation, repeated practice, reflection, and internalization. In the digital era, pesantren need to complement their established traditions with digital ethical literacy so that students can sustain moral integrity in both physical and virtual environments. The study concludes that the strength of pesantren character education lies in the integration of religious teachings, educational environment, exemplary figures, direct experience, and behavioral evaluation.
